Healthy Cinnamon Raisin Bagels

by hannahandfitness

Bagels. Everyone loves them right? In fact, I’m yet to meet someone who dares mouth the words that they dislike bagels. They’re best freshly baked, and in my opinion, stuffed with salmon and cream cheese (although my dairy free stomach would disagree) or enjoyed sweet – like these cinnamon raisin bagels – and topped with almond butter or chia jam.

I decided to bake these bagels on a whim really. I wasn’t quite sure what I was in the mood for but one thing was for sure – they had to be vertilise. Are these healthy cinnamon raisin bagels for breakfast, to be enjoyed as a snack, or heck, indulged as an after dinner treat? Or maybe all three? Ha! Either way, you wouldn’t catch me batting an eyelid when, or where you ate these! As long as you shared them with me.

These bagels are made with wholemeal flour instead of your typical processed flour to make them healthier. This can mean that the dough can be a little more dense but the secret to the these light cinnamon raisin bagels is in the kneading my friends. Just give me 10 minutes of your best kneading time and dang, you’ve got a delicious and healthy stack of bagels coming right up. The more you knead, the more airy the bagels will be. The greek yoghurt makes a difference too. I played around with two types – full fat and non-fat. The full fat provided the bagels with a little more air to them so if you don’t mind the extra fat (all good of course) then go ahead and use that.

The best bit about this recipe is that it’s quick (well, for a bagel recipe anyway) and it creates a mouth watering smell of cinnamon spice when they’re baking in the kitchen. I mean, there’s nothing better than the smell of treats baking in the oven, huh? Especially when it’s snowing outside!

Whilst these bagels are sweet, they’re not overly sweet. Therefore, feel free to add a little extra on top. A spread of almond butter and my homemade chia jam were the perfect addition – especially when the bagels are lightly toasted. Trust me. You have to try them toasted! These healthy cinnamon raisin bagels are light, chewy, full of cinnamon spice and bursting with juicy raisins. My favourite.

If you’re a bagel baker virgin then give these a go. I promise you that they’ll incredibly easy to make. Plus, they’ll make the perfect snack for the upcoming week. As if you need anymore convincing.

Ingredients

  • 290g self raising wholemeal flour + extra for dusting
  • 510g greek yoghurt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp xylitol (or other sugar free sweetener) - I use Total Sweet
  • 110g raisins
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon + extra for sprinkling
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • Big pinch of salt
  • 1 egg

Instructions

Begin by pre heating your oven to gas mark 4.

In a bowl add together your four and spices and mix. Slowly and gradually, add the yoghurt (you may not need to add it all - dependant on the flour you use) until you reach a bread dough texture. Add the raisins and mix. Once done, you should end up with a dough like texture (it may be a little sticky).

Flour your kitchen surface and pour the dough onto the kitchen top and begin kneading. You may need to add a little flour as you knead if the mixture is too sticky. Knead for about 5-10 minutes. The less kneading, the more dense the bagel will be!

Once you've kneaded the dough, cut it into 8 sections and roll them into balls.

Grease a baking tray and with each ball, insert your index and middle finger into the middle and pierce through until you have a hole. Using circular motions, widen the hole until you have a perfect bagel shape. Repeat this process with all balls and then place them on your greased baking tray.

In a bowl, whisk your egg and then brush the bagels with the egg liquid.

Sprinkle the bagels with a little extra cinnamon and then pop them in the middle of the oven to bake for 20-25 minutes.

Once baked, remove them from the oven and leave to cool.

Enjoy!

I love that these bagels are made with wholemeal flour instead of normal flour and to me these bagels look absolutely delicious. I like that they are made with cinnamon and raisin as that is one of my favourite bagel combinations that you could get!
