Hobnobs. Ah, a childhood favourite of mine. They’re crunchy, buttery, rough and oh so good. If I wasn’t nibbling on a chocolate bourbon as a child, then you can bet ya bottom dollar that I was stuffing my face with a few golden hobnobs from my nan’s ghastly flowery biscuit tin.
Nowadays my favourite kinda hobnob has to be the dark chocolate covered one’s. I’m a sucker for dark chocolate and there’s just something special about these biscuits. Highly addictive and highly moorish. When I was younger I could quite easily devour a packet of biscuits in one sitting and not look back. Don’t get me wrong, I could quite easily tuck into a hobnob or two now, but if I can create a recipe that’s equally as good and contains less sugar, less fat, less carbs and provides my body with healthier nutrients, then why wouldn’t I? So in true H&F style, I thought I’d bring you guys my first ever healthy biscuit recipe.
These healthy dark chocolate hobnobs have a completely oatey, buttery and slightly crunchy/soft base and are topped with a smooth, rich dark chocolate layer that’ll have you umming and urring about which side to eat upright first. Eating chocolate side up makes it more chocolatey. Fact. How crunchy these bad boys are depends on three things; how thick you make them, how long you bake them for and how you store them. I went with quite a thick biscuit base and baked my hobnobs for 10 minutes which left me with a crumbly and slightly softer base. If you’re after that biscuit crunch then make these biscuits as thin as you can and bake for a little longer.
The best way to enjoy these chocolatey hobnobs? The only British way possible of course, by dunking them in a good ol’ cuppa or a glass of milk for you kiddie winks.
Not only are these dark chocolate hobnobs ridiculously moorish, but they’re vegan, dairy free and refined sugar free – if you use dairy free butter and chocolate, that is! All you need are 8 simple ingredients (that you’ll probably already have in the cupboard) and you’re good to go. Perfect for a weekend/evening night bake.
Ingredients
- 105g oats
- 1 tsp Vivo Life maca powder (optional)
- 70g almond flour
- 1 tbsp + 1 tsp soft butter (dairy free if making dairy free)
- 3 tbsp agave nectar (I used The GroovyFood Company)
- 50ml almond milk
- 1 tbsp soft coconut oil
- 80g melted 85% dark chocolate (dairy free if making dairy free)
- Pinch salt
Instructions
Begin by pre-heating your oven to gas mark 5.
In a food mixer, add together all of the ingredients (except the milk and dark chocolate) and mix for a minute or so. Add the milk and mix together with a spoon. You should have quite a wet dough by now.
Grease a baking tray with either butter or coconut oil. Using about a tbsp of dough, roll it into the palm of your hands (squeezing out the excess milk) and pop on the baking tray with enough space to flatten. Repeat this process until you've used up all of your dough. With the palm of your hand, flatten all of the balls into a thin biscuit and pop in the middle of the oven to bake for 10 minutes (or until golden).
Once your biscuits are baked, remove from the oven and leave to cool completely. Whilst your hobnobs cool, melt your dark chocolate. You can either use the microwave for this or on the hob with a bowl, pan and hot water. Once your hobnobs are completely cool, add a fine layer of the melted chocolate onto each biscuit using a tbsp. I used 2 tbsp worth of chocolate for each biscuit. Place in the fridge until the chocolate cools.
Once chilled, remove from the fridge and serve.
These dark chocolate hobnobs keep best in an airtight container in the fridge and will probably last for up to 5 days (if you're self controlled that is).
Enjoy!

Chocolate hobnobs are one of my favourite biscuits so it’s good to see a slightly healthier recipe x
Oh yum…. I, too, love hobnobs… the fact that these are healthier than the average hobnob is a definite winner.
Nobnobs – healthy…….I am there, they look amazing
These sound so good! I absolutely adore hobnobs so finding a dairy-free recipe had bought a huge grin to my face!
Thank you! I’m baking them again this weekend actually as they were so popular 🙂
We make something similar and it’s one of my favourite afternoon snacks.
They look so Mich better than the original hobnobs. My mouth is watering for those now. Great job, mich x
Thanks, Mich! They certainly went down a treat 🙂
Oh they look delicious and super easy to adapt to Gluten Free as it would just be a case of switching the oats. Will definitely be making these in the future as I really struggle for snack ideas.
Wow! These look amazing, definitely need to make them one weekend.
