If you know me then you’ll know that my favourite dessert is apple crumble. Well actually, it’s a toss up between apple pie and apple crumble. If the pie is full of fat, chunky and sweet apple slices then ya can bet ya bottom dollar it’s the apple pie I’d go for. But if the apple crumble is crisp, golden and full of warm, apple chunks with a hint of cinnamon, then give me the biggest slice. If they’re as good as each other? I’ll take both please.
I’m a big fan of skillet recipes and now that I’ve finally found a suitable sized skillet (thank you TkMaxx – my holy grail store) I’m ready to make all the skillet recipes in the word – cookie or no cookie. Besides my Healthy Cookie Brownie Skillet recipe, this has got to be my second favourite. It might not be the most overpoweringly sweet apple cake you’ve ever had, but let me tell you, it’s sweet enough to go ahead and eat the whole thing to yourself.
This apple crumble cake skillet recipe is healthy, dairy free, coconut free, nut free and hey presto, quick and easy to make. Just what we like. The best bit about this recipe? The crisp golden crumble that sits on top of the warm apple cake which is filled with warm and sweet chunks of cinnamon apple.
To make this recipe coconut free (mainly for my non-coconut readers), I’ve used avocado oil instead of coconut oil and opted for xylitol sugar instead of coconut sugar. In fact, when testing this recipe with different oils I much preferred the avocado oil to the coconut. It didn’t make a huge difference but without the slight coconut flavour, it tasted much more like an apple crumble cake. Of course, if you’re a big coconut lover then please do go ahead and tweak to your baking desires!
Whilst this recipe is simple, it’s still one of my favourites. Warm, cinnamony (it most definitely is a word), moist and deliciously sweet. Served best with a dollop of salted caramel ice-cream to spoon the cake into. Perfecto.Â
This apple crumble cake is certainly a spring bake ‘must do’ so buy the ingredients, grab your pinny and let’s get baking, shall we?
Ingredients
- CAKE
- 40g + 4 tbsp self raising wholemeal flour
- 30g oat flour
- 1 egg + 1 egg white
- 1 cooking apple cut into chunks
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- pinch salt
- 1 tsp vanilla (I use Women's best vanilla drops - 5 drops)
- 4 tbsp avocado oil
- 4 tbsp xylitol (I use Total Sweet)
- TOPPING
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 30g oats
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
Instructions
Begin by pre heating your oven to gas mark 4.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs until fluffy. Add the sugar and oil and mix together.
In a separate bowl, add together the rest of the cake ingredients and stir through. Make a well and add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Mix everything together and pour the cake batter into a greased skillet.
In another bowl, mix together your topping ingredients and then sprinkle the crumble on top of the wet cake mixture. Place in the middle of the cake and bake for 15-17 minutes. Be careful and keep an eye on your cake as cooking temperatures vary!
Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave for a few minutes. Top with your favourite ice-cream, grab a few spoons and tuck in! Enjoy fellow apple crumble cake lovers.

Oh my, my mouths watering. This looks absolutely delicious. I do need to make this at some time.
I’ve recently made my own apple crumble with toffee but it wasn’t nearly as healthy as your version. You are right about the top crumble being the best bit! I really should invest in a skillet as its such a versatile kitchen piece to have.
